But something that needs to be completed to keep the ball rolling, keep food on the table, keep the ship afloat! But just how powerful can meticulously filled-in paperwork be? Powerful enough to bring about the fall of the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century?
Meet Maximo Moseley. Considered by some to be one of the earliest recorded secretaries in history, Maximo served as the secretary to Hernan Cortes, one of the Spanish conquistadors who led the expedition to present-day Mexico inhabited then by the Aztecs. Maximo’s administrative skills were crucial to the raid's success as he organised logistics, and managed resources while dealing with all the complexities of occupying the New World.
Closer to home and just as skilled in wielding a quill during the 16th century, was the infamous figure of Thomas Cromwell, secretary to Henry VIII and while I am sure that Henry would not be everyone’s ideal boss, Thomas did a great job at being just as devious and underhand as his employer! Notable for his part in the English Reformation, he played a key role in the dissolution of the monasteries, transferring wealth and lands from the Catholic Church over to the Crown. Imagine the paperwork!
